About Konstantin Manaev

Born in Russia in 1983, Konstantin Manaev began his cello lessons at the age of 7. He studied at the Special Music School of the Moscow Conservatory with Kirill Rodin, at Detmold/Münster Hochschule für Musik and Carl Maria von Weber Hochschule für Musik in Dresden with Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt.

Manaev continued his studies at the Music Academy in Basel with Ivan Monighetti, who highly contributed to the development of his musical personality and interpretation skills. As his mentors, Manaev also counts David Geringas and Natalia Gutman.

Manaev gained international recognition through his participation in several competitions. His prizes and awards include Grand Prix at the International Wilkomirski cello Competition in Poznan, Poland, the 1st Prize at the Concorsi Internazionale di Musica Val Tidone, Italy, the 1st Prize at New Names Competition in Moscow and at the 12th Young Concert Artists European Auditions in Leipzig, as well as 2d Prize at the 6th ADAM International Cello Competition in Christchurch, New Zealand. Manaev engaged in concert appearances in the Grand Hall Moscow Conservatory, in Semperoper Dresden, in the Berlin and Cologne Philharmonic, in Tonhalle Zurich and in the Auditorio Nacional de Musica in Madrid.

As a soloist, Manaev regularly appears in the USA, Europe, Japan and Russia. He has performed with Moscow Symphony Orchestra, The St.Petersburg Chamber Philharmonie, The Nordwestdeutschen Philharmonie, The Sinfonietta Köln, The Luzerner and The Basel Symphony Orchestra and worked under the direction of renowned conductors, such as Daniel Raiskin, Gabriel Feltz, Arvo Volmer and Daniel Cohen.

Along with active solo engagements, Manaev established himself as a chamber musician. He is a frequent guest at the Festspielen Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Montebello Festival, the Piatigorsky Festival in Los Angeles, the Viana do Castelo International Music Festival, the Viva Cello International Violoncello Festival and at the Rostropovich Music Festival in Switzerland. Konstantin Manaev performs regularly with chamber music players including Zakhar Bron, Bruno Giuranna, Misha Maisky, Sofia Gubaidulina, Franghiz Ali-Zadeh, Kateryna Titova, Felix Renggli, Francois Benda and Radovan Vlatkovic.

An unusually versatile performer, Konstantin Manaev is also active on the contemporary music scene. He collaborated with choreographer Jiri Kylián in his ballett „ONE OF A KIND“ composed by Brett Dean for violoncello solo, electronics and dancer at the Staatstheater Basel and have recorded works of Azeri composer Franghiz Ali Zadeh under participation of the composer herself, with the accordionist Alexander Matrosov for the CLCL label, which was well-received by the international press.

Konstantin Manaev received scholarships from Werner Richard Dr. Carl Dörken Foundation, the Dorian Foundation, the Vladimir Spivakov Foundation and the New Names-Foundation in Moscow. Since 2012, Manaev has lived in Berlin and has a Docent position at the Blackmore International Music Academy. Also Konstantin Manaev is an Artistic Director of the International Lithuanian Chamber Music Festival and "Klassik Exklusiv" concert series in Berlin.
