About Aleka

Aleka started studying music when she was 5 years old; she had played classical piano for 4 years and at the age of 10, started playing cello. In 2011 she took her degree at “Ciprian Porumbescu” Music University of Bucharest, studying with maestro Marin Cazacu. Through the years Aleka has improved her cello playing working with several important cellists around the world, winning many national and international competitions, playing in youth and professional orchestras and chamber music ensembles.

Aleka started studying jazz officially in 2008 at the Music University, attending a jazz/vocal module with singer Luiza Zan. After, followed the jazz master-classes with great musicians like: guitarist Sorin Romanescu, pianist Mircea Tiberian, vocalists Elsa Valle (Cuba), Gábor Winand (Budapesta), sax player Viktor Tóth (Budapesta) and teachers from New York- New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music.

She was part of the first project of instrumental theatre from Romania, in the play named “Dreamer’s ID”. This piece includes string instruments, clarinet, piano and percussion playing contemporary music, improvisation and also dancers with their contemporary dance.

The appearances in shows at national channels and radios which promote classical music or jazz – are very familiar to her.

A short rock adventure recording some cello lines for a rock band “Tiarra” in their album “Post Scriptum” and the privilege to record for the movie soundtrack “Youth without youth”, a film made by Francis Ford Coppola, are some of her other musical projects she got involved in.

It’s natural for her to sing in duos, trios, quartets in prestigious jazz clubs and cafes all around Romania. In 2010 ATA Jazz Trio (Aleka- voice, Toma Dimitriu – piano, Andreas Aron –bass) competed in “The Way to Celebrity” competition, which was broadcast at the Radio Romania Cultural. In 2011, she was part of the “Synergy Tour” in Romania playing cello and singing next to Luiza Zan, Alex Mann and Rick Condit in a bossa nova project.
Based in Dublin, Aleka is studying jazz in Newpark Music Centre.
