Jelena Mihailovic, ( www.jelacello.com ) cellist, was born in 1987 in Valjevo, Serbia. The basic musical education was acquired at the music school “Zivorad Grbic” in Valjevo in class of prof. Nada Jovanovic. She continued secondary education in the music school “Slavenski” in Belgrade, also in the class of prof.Nada Jovanovic and completed it as the best student.
She participated in and won numerous awards at national and international competitions:-First-prize at the Festival of Music and Ballet Schools of Serbia, 1999.-First-prize at the Republic Competition, 2000.-Third Prize at the Federal Competition, 2000.-Second Prize at the Festival of Music and Ballet Schools of Serbia, 2001.-Third Prize at the Republic competition, 2002.-Third Prize at the International Competition “Aleksandar Glazunov” in Paris, 2003.-First-prize at the Republic Competition, 2004.-First-prize at the Republic Competition 2006.
She continued studies of music at the Faculty of Music is the school year 2006/2007 enrolled as a regular student baseline studies / Department of string / Cello, in the class of prof.Dragan Djordjevic. Bachelor study was completed within an average of 9.65, and thereafter continued to master study at the Faculty of Music in Belgrade, also with prof. Dragan Djordjevic. She graduated within the grade 10, with an average score of 9.78 on the master studies as one of the best students of the generation.
She has also continued her studies at numerous seminars where she had opportunity to work with established artists such as: Xenia Jankovic, Stefan Popov, Mineo Hayasi, Mark Kosover, Gary Hoffman, Leonid Gorokhov, Gautier Capuçon, Christian Pierre La Marca, David Strange, and many other.
In 2005 Jelena was a member of the Youth Orchestra of Central Europe (artistic director Igor Corretti).
Periodically, she is also a member of the Youth Orchestra of South-Eastern Europe, based in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina (artistic director Sinisa Markovic).
In 2008 and the 2009 Jelena attended the International Academy for orchestra and chamber music, Hvar, Croatia, led by pianist and conductor Christian Clett.
In 2008/2009 was the solo cellist of the Academic Orchestra of Faculty of Music under the baton of Maestro Bojan Sudjic.Jelena is a regular participant of the Belgrade International Cello Fest, and in 2011 she performed on the concert with the most talented young cellists from the country conducted under the guidance of prof. David Strange (professor of the Royal Academy in London).As a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician, she has performed in theaters and concert halls across the country as well as abroad (Italy, Germany, France, Austria, Slovakia, Romania, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia …).
In 2011 Jelena recorded the album “Crash” published by PGP RTS, where can be found eleven musical compositions from the period of Bach, Ravel and Brahms, to the 21st century (Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles), for solo cello and symphony orchestra (producer Alexander Habic). Material from the album Jelena presented at numerous events as well as in television shows where her performances have caused a positive reaction to music critics and a wider audience. Jelena’s original musical expression woke up interest of the known production companies and music agents such as Larry Hart (known for his work with Michael Jackson) and Mel Bush (Vanessa Mae manager, David Bowie, Elton John …). One of the purposes of dealing with this kind of musical expression is the approach of classical music to wider audience, and drawing attention to the opportunities that cello as an instrument provides.
Jelena completed specialist studies at the Faculty of Music in Belgrade and she is employed at the Alpha University ,at the Academy of Music as professor of cello (docent) , where she enrolled in the doctoral studies. Jelena is the official promoter of Belgrade’s candidacy for Cultural Capital of Europe in 2020. On her initiative was formed Symphony Orchestra “Jela Cello Power Symphony Orchestra” that will promote Belgrade and country in the process of obtaining the already mentioned nomination. “Jela Cello Power Symphony Orchestra consists of 50 young artists, who are all students or graduates of music academies, and who are performing music with Jela Jelena Mihailovic, running in its own and unique way.
Jelena won the prestigious social recognition “gold badge”, Gold Medal by the selfless, dedicated and long-term performance and the creative contribution in spreading the culture, traditionally awarded by the Cultural and Educational Community of Serbia in cooperation with the Ministry of Religion and Diaspora of the Republic of Serbia, which was awarded at a ceremony held on April 18, 2012th at the National Theatre in Belgrade.
