Mag­dalena Anna Hof­mann was born in War­saw, Poland and and com­pleted her for­mal vocal train­ing in Vienna.
After her soprano debut as Con­tessa Alma­viva in Le Nozze di Figaro at Klosterneuburg Fes­ti­val in July 2011, Mag­dalena Anna Hof­mann sung her first and highly acclaimed Kundry in a new pro­duc­tion of Wagner’s Par­si­fal in Rahvu­sooper, Tallinn, Estonia.
Ms.Hofmann has estab­lished a long rela­tion­ship with the The­ater an der Wien and the Wiener Fest­wochen, hav­ing per­formed in numer­ous pro­duc­tions such as Henze’s Phae­dra (title role) con­ducted by Michael Boder, Mar­gret in Wozzeck with Daniel Hard­ing, Gym­nasi­ast in Lulu under the baton of Daniele Gatti, Glasa in Katja Kabanova under Kir­ill Petrenko, Stella in Les con­tes d’Hoffmann with Ric­cardo Frizza and Mère Jeanne in Dia­logues des Car­mélites under Bertrand de Billy. Her col­lab­o­ra­tion with Bertrand de Billy extends to con­certs fea­tur­ing works by Beethoven as well as an upcom­ing Mathis der Maler by Hin­demith in Decem­ber 2012.
Ms. Hof­mann has also per­formed at the Bre­genz Fes­ti­val in Janacek’s The cun­ning lit­tle Vixen and Tage­buch eines Ver­schol­lenen and Blaubart by Offenbach.
In 2009 and 2010 she gave her house debuts at l’Opéra de Lyon and at Teatro alla Scala in Milan with Peter Stein‘s pro­duc­tion of Berg‘s Lulu. The same pro­duc­tion was also shown at The­ater an der Wien, again with Mag­dalena Anna Hof­mann as Gym­nasi­ast and Groom. Other engage­ments include Venus in Tannhäuser at Oper Bonn, La Voleuse/Chantal in Eötvös’ Le Bal­con at l’Opéra National de Bor­deaux and Jakob Lenz (W.Rhim) at Wiener Festwochen.
Dur­ing her early career as a mezzo soprano Ms. Hof­mann sung roles includ­ing Dora­bella in Cosi fan tutte, Cherubino/Marcellina in Le nozze di Figaro, Frau Reich in Nicolai’s Die lusti­gen Weiber von Wind­sor, Orfeo in Orfeo ed Euridice, Fox in The cun­ning lit­tle Vixen, and Jez­ibaba in Rusalka.
Highly expe­ri­enced in con­tem­po­rary music reper­toire, Ms. Hof­mann has sung lead­ing roles in operas by Hans Werner Henze, Detlev Glan­ert, Eino­juhani Rautavaara, Peter Eötvös, Michael Tip­pett, Sal­va­tore Scia­r­rino and Peter Maxwell Davies as well as Arnold Schön­berg and Alban Berg with orga­ni­za­tions such as the Wiener Klang­bo­gen, Neue Oper Wien, Wiener Kam­meroper and Stadtthe­ater Kla­gen­furt.
Ms. Hof­mann has worked with con­duc­tors such as Betrand de Billy, Michael Boder, Daniele Gatti, Daniel Hard­ing, Kir­ill Petrenko, Lothar Königs, Vladimir Fedose­jev, Kazushi Ono, Kwamè Ryan, Arvo Volmer, Ric­cardo Frizza as well as the stage direc­tors Keith Warner, Peter Stein, Frank Cas­torf, Gerd Heinz, Stéphane Braun­schweig, Matthias von Stegmann, Stephen Lan­gridge, Daniel Slater, Nicola Raab, William Fried­kin and John Full­james.
Her most recent engag­ments have have been with l’Opéra de Lyon where she enjoyed lead­ing roles in Von heute auf mor­gen (Schön­berg) and Sancta Susanna (Hin­demith) in a very suc­cess­ful pro­duc­tions under the baton of Bern­hard Kon­tarsky and directed by John Full­james. At the same place she is to be seen and heard in the lead­ing role in Schönberg’s Erwartung and Dallapiccola’s Il Pri­gion­iero directed by La Fura dels Baus, con­ducted by Kazushi Ono.
Future engage­ments will find Ms. Hof­mann at the Aus­trian Operetta Fes­ti­val Bad Hall as Hanna Glawari in The Merry Widow, at the The­ater an der Wien where she will per­form Gräfin Helfen­stein in Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler, in Tallinn with Venus/Elisabeth in Tannhäuser, at the Tel Aviv Israeli Opera in The Pas­sen­ger and at the Bre­genz Fes­ti­val where she will be heard as First Lady in The Magic Flute.
