Massimo Marchese was born in Savona (Italy) in 1965. He studied lute with Jakob Lindberg and he took the Diploma at the "Royal College of Music" of London. In Italy he took the Diploma di Laurea di II secondo livello in Discipline Musicali Scuola di Liuto at “Istituto Superiore di Studi Musicali F. Vittadini” in Pavia. Moreover, he attended many specialisation courses with Paul O'Dette.
He has been carrying a concert activity both as soloist and as continous player in a lot ensembles since 1980, cooperating with musicians like Jakob Lindberg, Nigel Rogers, Danilo Costantini, Gaetano Nasillo, Patrizia Pace, Pietro Spagnoli, Enrico Gatti, Lorenzo Girodo, Flavio Emilio Scogna. He has held concerts in several italian towns like Milano, Torino, Bologna, Parma, Genova, Siracusa, Cagliari etc., in European countries like France, German, Switzerland, Spain, Bulgaria, England, Finland, Scotland, Netherlands and in South America too. He participated in important festivals like “Oude Muziek - Festival of the Lute” - Utrecht, Settembre Musica", "Piemonte in Musica", "Festival Internazionale delle Arti barocche", Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Paris - Université de Paris IV, Sorbonne, Festival di Musica Sacra di Tenerife, Settimane musicali di Sofia.
He recorded for RAI (radio 2, radio 3 - Piazza Verdi e Radio 3 Suite - La Stanza della Musica), National Radio of Bulgaria, RCA, Bongiovanni, Stradivarius, Tactus, Solstice, Concerto, Brilliant, Calliope and Centaur Records. He played with ensemble "Dodekachordon - lute orchestra" directed by Jakob Lindberg. He devoted himself to study various music teaching methods like Orff and Goitre.
For several years he has been carrying out the activity of formation for school primary teachers. He was from 1993 to 2000 president of Alessandria's s.i.e.m. (Società Italiana per l'Educazione Musicale) di Alessandria dal 1993 al 2000 and in 1997 he partecipated in the works of the "Landeskongress schulmusik" in Stuttgart.He is also a musicologist and he was keynote speaker in many conferences. He was artistic director of Ancient Music International Festivals in Savona, Vigevano e Alessandria. He taught lute in International summer courses of Ancient Music in Prato and Ravello and he worked as Ottavio Dantone's assistant during the ensemble music course at the International Courses in Pamparato.From 1993 to 1996 he has taught and directed "Accademia di Musica Antica in San Giovannino" in Alessandria. He taught lute at "Vivaldi" conservatory 's ancient music department in Alessandria and he worked with "Lorenzo Perosi" conservatory in Campobasso.
