Grammy Awards nominated trumpeter Niklas Eklund, was born in Göteborg (Gothenburg) in 1969. Trained at the School of Music and Musicology of Göteborg University. Further studies took place under the tutelage of Edward H. Tarr at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis.
After five years as solo trumpeter with the Basle Radio Symphony Orchestra, Niklas Eklund left the orchestra in the autumn of 1996 to further his career as a soloist. Since then he has appeared with several leading musicians and conductors such as Cecilia Bartoli, Zubin Metha, John Eliot Gardiner, Heinz Holliger, Andras Schiff, Eric Ericson, Ivan Fisher and Gustav Leonhardt. In 1996, Eklund was the first prize winner of the first Altenburg International Baroque trumpet competition, hold in Bad Säckingen (Germany). Eklund played a permanent part in Sir John Eliot Gardiner Bach Pilgrimage performances and recordings (Archive DG) in year 2000.
Besides giving concerts in Sweden and Europe, he is appearing as a guest performer and teacher in the USA, Australia, the Ukraine, Russia and New Zealand. For Naxos, Niklas Eklund has recorded a magnificent five-volume overview of the Baroque trumpet, (sold over 400 000 ex.) embracing composers as diverse as Handel, Torelli, Sweelinck, Vivaldi, Haydn and Molter.
Haydn and Hummel (Naxos) (on modern trumpet) was released international in summer 2003 and became outstanding worldwide reviews in(The Times, The Telegraph, Gramophone, American record guide, Amazon and Klassik-Heute). He also has recorded a new version of the Brandenburg No: 2 (2008 Grammy Awards nominated) (Naxos) which appeared internationally on the market in the fall 2006. In the year 2005, Eklund was exclusively touring together with Cecilia Bartoli as a soloist performing at some of the most prestigious Concerts venues in the world such as Carnegie Hall, Chicago Symphony Hall, Berlin Philharmonic Hall, Concertgebouw Amsterdam Eklund played Solo trumpet with the famous Violons du Roy in the years 2006-2008. In the season 2007-2008, he played and toured worldwide with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. He also held the position as invited professor at the Laval Université as well as giving trumpet lessons at M c Gill University (Montreal). Besides giving private lessons, Eklund is currently giving worldwide solo and orchestra performances.
