About Samuel Marques


Clarinetist Samuel Brandão Marques began his studies at the age of five with Nelson Aguiar (Aveiro Music Conservatory) and continued his studies with António Saiote (Music and Performing Arts College – Porto), before studying under Stanley Drucker, Pascual Martínez-Forteza and Dennis Smylie at New York University’s Steinhardt School. At NYU he obtained a Masters degree in Instrumental Performance, an Advanced Certificate in Music Education, and was also an Adjunct Instructor.

Mr. Marques was awarded in several clarinet and chamber music competitions in Portugal, Spain, US, Peru and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Since 2013, Mr. Marques has been selected to numerous orchestra festivals, such as the National Repertory Orchestra (USA), Castleton Festival Orchestra (USA), World Peace Orchestra (USA), New York Youth Symphony (USA), Atlantic Music Festival (USA), Neue Philharmonie München (Germany), Internationale Junge Orchesterakademie (Germany), just to name a few.

In 2017, Mr. Marques was awarded with the 1st Prize at the 7th National Young Clarinetists Competition (Portugal), 2nd Prize at the Clarinet Competition of the 1st Algarve Clarinet Festival (Portugal) and was selected as one of the winners of the IMKA Grand Prix Concert Competition, and as a result he had his recital debut in Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and became under representation of IMKA Artists. Mr. Marques was invited to appear at the Alexander Arutiunian International Wind Festival (Yerevan, Armenia) where he performed with the National Chamber Orchestra of Armenia, plus chamber music concerts and also taught a masterclass.

Mr. Marques regularly collaborates as a guest musician with Portugal’s Gulbenkian Orchestra, Remix Ensemble Casa da Música and Portuguese Philharmonic Orchestra, and as a permanent musician with Atlantic Coast Orchestra, Orquestra “Ópera no Património” and Orquestra do Atlântico. He has performed with names such as Joyce DiDonato, Maria João Pires, Arcadi Volodos, Waltraud Meier, Martin Frutiger, Augustin Dumay, Gary Hoffman, Claire Booth, Mário Laginha, Quarteto Vintage. Mr. Marques is on the Clarinet faculty at Braga’s Calouste Gulbenkian Music Conservatory (Braga, Portugal), Albergaria Club’s Music Academy (Albergaria-a-Velha, Portugal) and MúsicAmiga School (Aveiro, Portugal).
