Thomas Huw Lumley (1987 - present) born in Aberdyfi, Mid-Wales (UK), began music at the age of 4 finding jazz and the saxophone at age 12 he performed with the Gwynedd and Angelsey Youth Jazz Orchestra in the Royal Albert Hall at the age of 15 and hasn’t looked back since!
After Graduating with a first class BA honours degree from Leeds College of Music and graduating from a Masters degree at CODARTS Conservatory in Rotterdam (NL) funded by the Arts Council of Wales’ specializing in research on the use of Low Tech electronics within freely improvised music Thomas’ skills lay in his uncanny improvisational ability and unique creative approach to jazz and improvised music.
With knowledge and influences ranging from the avant guarde jazz world along with contemporary Improvised music, Balkan folk music, Hudustani Classical music, Afro Cuban music and DIY Avant Guarde Electronica Thomas' sound, approach and energy are a unique blend of all of these. His main musical focus is involved with the acute and detailed processes of improvisation. His interests lay in how the combinations of musical elements from separate genres can flow together and how both the academic process, emotive urges and an organic sense of freedom can be combined to produce wonderfully elaborate music without the need for pre-learned scores or musical preconceptions.
Thomas has performed and toured with many artists, names including Tony Allen (Fela Kuti), Brian Jackson (Gil Scott-Heron), Mathew Bourne, Frank Vigroux, Chris Sharkey (Acoustic Lady Land, Trio Vd), Dave Kane, Huw Warren, along with being an active Member of LIMA (Leeds improvised Music Association) Tom is currently touring with the Rotterdam based Hip-Hop band Re:Freshed Orchestra, the Cologne (Germany) based free improv group Blemishes and has also toured in Cyprus and Spain performing with many outstanding musicians and gracing the ears of many an audience with his energetic and outstandingly technical approach.
