Yu-Fen Chang Dec 11, 2014

Yu-Fen Chang studied and obtained her “diplôme supérieur” from Brussels Royal Conservatory. She has attended master-classes and studied with Vitaly Margulis, Louiz de Moura Castro, Dimitri Bashkirov, John Perry, Pierre Réach and Elisso Virsaladze. Besides being a pianist, She always had great interest in literature. Thomas Mann, Dostojevsky and Marquez became her treasured writers. Out of interest, she has also worked as a freelance writer for magazines and as a journalist for newspapers about cultural life and social events. These experiences have played an important role in enriching both her musical understanding and her interpretation.

Yu-Fen likes to perform so called mixed programmes, as she describes: “ I like to give the audience the feeling as though they have taken an emotional sauna. I try to do that by combining the standard romantic repertory of 19th century with either Scarlatti or Bach and on the other hand composers like Lepo Sumera, Tan Dun (much to his pleasure as he stated), Silvestrov, Janacek, Ginastera, Villa Lobos and Schnittke

She performs all over Europe, Russia included. She made her acting debut when she played the role of a pianist in the movie ‘Komma’ (directed by Martine Doyen) together with the Belgian singer/actor Arno. She has recently performed Galina Ustvolskaya’s Piano Concerto and Valentin Silvestrov’s Epitaph with Andres Mustonen and Tallinn Sinfonietta. The Ural Philharmonic Orchestra with Dmitri Liss invited her to perform Mozart and Schnittke concerti in one program.

In Belgium, her country of residence, she has performed in all the major concert-halls and festivals: KlaraFestival, Midis-Minimes, Ars Musica, BOZAR (recitals and with NOB), Flagey, Handelsbeurs, Brussels Royal Conservatory, Brussels Airport… even in a botanical garden surrounded by peacocks.
